Interior DesigN: attic bedroom - tunbridge wells

The Project

The transition from a nursery to a "big boy room" is a significant milestone for any family. For this project in Tunbridge Wells, the challenge lay in an attic space defined by its steep, sloping eaves. Our brief was to replace the outgrown cot bed with a permanent, sophisticated solution that would not only serve a young boy starting school but remain stylish and functional well into his teenage years.

The goal was to turn a potentially awkward architectural quirk into the room’s most enchanting feature: a bespoke, built-in "den" that feels both expansive and incredibly cozy.

what we did

In a room where floor space is at a premium, custom joinery is the ultimate problem-solver. We designed, built, and installed a floor-to-ceiling cabin bed unit, finished in the soft, mid-tone of Lulworth Blue. This choice of palette provides a serene backdrop that bridges the gap between childhood playfulness and a more mature aesthetic.

Key features of the build include:

The Sleep Sanctuary: A recessed bed area that creates a "room within a room" feel, perfect for a sense of security and adventure.

Maximum Utility: We utilised the base of the bed for oversized drawers equipped with premium soft-close runners - essential for heavy-duty toy storage and easy access for small hands.

Bespoke Wardrobing: At either end of the bed, we integrated custom cupboards featuring a mix of versatile shelving and hanging space, ensuring the room’s footprint remains uncluttered.

The Book Nook: Tucked into the internal headboard area, we carved out dedicated shelving to keep favorite bedtime stories within arm’s reach.

To elevate the joinery, we curated a selection of high-end finishes that add character and warmth. Lighting was a primary focus; we installed discreet, integrated LED strips to provide a soft glow for evening reading, complemented by a striking Matilda Goad wall light with a signature scalloped shade. The brass Matilda Goad knobs on the cabinetry add a touch of traditional elegance against the blue timber.

The textiles were chosen to inject a sense of "English Eccentric" charm. We selected a whimsical Beata Heuman fabric for the Roman blind - a pattern that sparks the imagination without feeling overly "themed." This is paired with vintage Joules bedding, while a vibrant rainbow throw and a matching textured rug provide a playful pop of primary color, layering warmth over the neutral wool carpet.

By rethinking the eaves, we transformed a cramped attic corner into a multifunctional suite. This project proves that with clever joinery and a thoughtful color palette, even the most challenging spaces can be turned into a sanctuary that grows alongside its inhabitant.

"A perfect blend of practicality and play, designed to withstand the rigours of school life while maintaining a timeless designer edge."
