The brief

This was a very exciting room to design - the brief was clear - to transition from dark and gloomy dining room into a light, bright space for the children to play in.

With beautiful period details, including original sash windows, fireplace, deep skirting and elegant plasterwork I knew we had the framework to create a stunning space. The key requests were for storage and comfort - this room has to work hard alongside the needs of the young family of six.

With children varying in age from 11years - 2months there are many different needs: including desk space, floor space, storage space and then most important of all - a big sofa for the family to snuggle up on.

Using the soft pink backdrop of Edward Bulmer's Jonquil painted walls, we set to work creating a room that feels relaxing and inviting. We added roman blinds to let the light flood in and then bold blue curtains to contrast the walls and bring out the palette from the blinds.

Another key consideration was flooring and we added a thickly textured wool carpet to ramp up the cosiness. With bespoke cabinetry to house TV, hide toys and provide desk space for the older children we were able to maximise storage.

Lighting played a key part in the project with layers of light being introduced. This ranged from functional new LED spots being installed, strip lights in the bookcase to the beautiful fluted wall lights in the desk area.

Finally - the finishing touch was a fabulous fluorescent light using the family's own favorite phrase to add personality and another all important another splash of colour
