Interior DesigN: teen bedroom - hadlow, kent
The brief
For this teen boy’s bedroom, our brief was wonderfully specific – create a space inspired by a sophisticated gentleman’s club, yet still relaxed and personal enough to grow with him over the coming years. The result is a layered, characterful scheme that feels timeless rather than trend-led.
what we did
The transformation began with the architecture of the room. We introduced classic wall panelling to add depth, structure and a sense of heritage. All walls were painted in Green Smoke by Farrow & Ball – a beautifully moody green-grey that shifts subtly with the light and immediately creates that club-like atmosphere. To keep the space feeling balanced and airy, the ceiling and area above the picture rail were painted in School House White by Farrow & Ball, offering a soft contrast and preventing the darker tone from feeling overpowering.
Window treatments were kept elegant and understated. Linen curtains were elevated with a Samuel & Sons trim, “Chloe”, adding a subtle detail that nods to traditional tailoring. They are hung from a simple French pole, allowing the fabric and trim to take centre stage without unnecessary fuss.
Lighting was key to achieving the gentleman’s club mood. We selected a statement Pooky pendant and coordinating bedside lights. The wall lights are a practical cabled plug-in style, avoiding the need for disruptive wall chasing while still delivering symmetry and a warm, ambient glow perfect for reading or winding down.
Furniture was thoughtfully layered with sentimental family pieces to ground the scheme. A well-loved leather armchair brings instant character and a sense of history, while an elegant dark wood tall boy adds both storage and gravitas. These pieces ensure the room feels established and personal rather than newly installed.
Finally, the flooring was refreshed with a new carpet, softening the space underfoot and complementing the rich palette. Textural layers – from crisp cotton bedding to a woven rug and tactile throws – add warmth and informality, ensuring the scheme never feels too formal or contrived. Carefully chosen accessories and books introduce personality and a sense of story, reflecting our client’s interests while maintaining the room’s refined tone.
The finished space feels confident, cocooning and quietly luxurious – a refined retreat that strikes the perfect balance between boyhood and adulthood, and a room designed to evolve effortlessly over time.
